Sunday, 01 April 2007 PRESS RELEASEA TREASURE RETURNS
The Tamworth based Peel Society have recently rescued a Staffordshire treasure from the United States. A Wedgwood plaque, made in Staffordshire, of Sir Robert Peel, twice Home Secretary and Prime Minister in the first half of the 19th C was acquired from the Zeitlin collection in Massachusetts USA. It is based on the famous portrait of Sir Robert Peel by Sir Thomas Lawrence painted in 1826, a copy of which hangs in Tamworth's Town Hall. The plaque was probably produced after Sir Robert's untimely death in 1850. It will go on display at the Peel Collection in Middleton Hall and can be seen when the Hall is open on most Sundays and bank Holidays between Easter and the end of September or by private appointment. Middleton Hall opens this year on Easter Monday, April 9th. End |
