The Peel Collection at Middleton Hall, B78 2AE, is a unique collection of memorabilia about one of Britain's greatest politicians, Sir Robert Peel (1788 – 1850). He was twice Home Secretary and Prime Minister in the first half of the C19th. He is best known for passing the Metropolitan Police Act 1829 and for reforms of the criminal justice system, hence the name for policemen as "bobbies". In 1846, he passed the Repeal of the Corn Laws, which led to cheaper food for the growing working classes in industrial Britain.
When he died in 1850, there was an outpouring of grief, which has never been accorded to another politician. The Staffordshire pottery industry produced a huge range of commemorative ceramics. The Peel Collection at Middleton Hall has a unique selection of the items.
The collection is open most Sundays from Easter to the end of September and Bank Holiday Mondays or by appointment. The Peel Society welcomes visits from local schools also by appointment.
